Czechs have been part of Nebraska's story since the mid-19th century, contributing greatly to our state's culture, institutions, and communities. Czech immigrants were among the most literate immigrant groups, and at one time, Nebraska had as many as 48 Czech-language publications. Nebraska Czechs also established theaters, fraternal organizations, literary societies, and music ensembles that enriched community life across the state. In addition, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln has offered Czech language courses since 1907. Nebraska Czechs have also helped strengthen international ties for generations - from supporting the formation of a free Czechoslovak Republic to welcoming Czech ambassadors and cultural delegations to Nebraska.

Today, Nebraska has the highest percentage of Czech immigrants and their descendants, and Czech heritage continues to have an impact. Annual Czech festivals across the state attract thousands of visitors and support local tourism and businesses.

While no single proclamation can fully capture the many contributions Czech immigrants and their descendants have made to Nebraska, the goal of Nebraska Czech Heritage Week is to celebrate and share those contributions with as many people as possible. Throughout the week, there will be events, cultural programming, and partnerships with local businesses across the state. Whether you have been a part of the Czech-American community for a long time or have just stumbled upon this page, we welcome you and hope you will join us in celebrating!
